The Comets, with their heads held high as WNIHL Division 2 South League champions, entered the last regular game of the season with the determination to finish on a high note.
After a tough loss against the Cobras in the previous week, they knew the opposition would come back fighting fiercely on their home rink.
Right from the beginning, it was evident that this game would be a tougher challenge, with the Cobras showing greater aggression. However, their efforts were not enough to keep the Comets from taking an early lead, with #22 Chloe Matthews scoring the first goal just 5 minutes and 30 seconds into the game. This was swiftly followed by two quick goals from the impressive #98 Leah Cannon, continuing her impressive form from the previous week's hat-trick. Chloe Matthews, after her goal and assist, rounded off an eventful 1st period with a penalty, which the Comets successfully killed without any impact on the score line.
The second period saw familiar Comet lines on the ice, and #10 Rachel Miles sneaked in a goal around the 25-minute mark. A tripping call on the Cobras led to a tense two-minute powerplay, but the Comets were unable to capitalize. Nevertheless, Leah Cannon added to her tally with two more goals in the second period, surpassing her three goals from the previous game.
With a comfortable 6-0 lead heading into the 3rd period, the Comets maintained their intensity. A roughing call on Leah Cannon led to a powerplay opportunity for the Cobras, but the Comets quickly turned the tables, and #20 Maddie Davies scored a shorthanded goal. The excitement didn't end there, as #27 Amy Cannon added a beauty of a goal to the scoreline, followed by back-to-back penalties called against the Cobras. Although the Comets couldn't capitalize on the power plays, the last ten minutes saw a flurry of goals. Maddie Davies netted two more in quick succession, securing her first Comets hat-trick. #88 Becca Egerstrom then joined in on the scoring in the 58th minute, and just when it seemed like the game was winding down, #15 Liv Taylor scored an incredible goal with just one second left on the clock, adding a final flourish to the Comets' impressive victory.
With the regular season now behind them, the Comets eagerly look forward to the upcoming WNIHL playoffs. The excitement and anticipation are high as they prepare to face off against formidable opponents at Ice Sheffield in a few weeks' time.
