Comets Win vs Midnight Stars 6-0

The last game of the 2016/2017 season saw a great performance from the Cardiff Comets, winning with a shutout 6-0 against the Oxford City Midnight Stars.

Straight out of the gate the Comets skated strongly, hungry for the win to keep them in line for 2017 playoffs and to end the season with a home victory. The first goal of the game, and the only goal of the 1st period, came from Cardiff winger #32 Sam Zala, assisted by #16 Kam Bristow.

Early in the 2nd period Cardiff’s 1st line centre #8 Bryony Roberts, assisted by #15 Olivia Taylor, scored @24:01, advancing the score board to 2-0. The 2nd period then saw two penalties given in short succession. Firstly, for Oxford’s Assistant Captain #25 Rance @28:20 for hooking, followed by Cardiff’s #17 Ella Nesic for slashing @ 30:08. Both net minders did well to hold off while the opposition had power plays, however @ 33:15 Oxford let Cardiff’s #32 Zala get her 2nd goal of the game to the back of the net, extending Cardiff’s lead to 3-0.

A slow 15 minutes at the start of the final period with replacement net minder for Cardiff, #24 Courtney Newitt, holding off any attack attempts, and Oxford doing well despite losing their #8 Clements for 2 minutes in the bin for a tripping offence @ 44:58.

An opportunity came from Cardiff @ 51:34, breaking the stalemate, with 2nd line centre #18 Amy Hill scoring her first goal of the season assisted by #32 Zala.

Zala #32, hungry for a hat trick, made a powerful shot on goal with the puck stopping just before the line. Luckily, Hill #18 was in front of the net and able to tap it past the keeper for the Comets’ 5th goal timed @ 55:32. Less than a minute later @ 56:11, 2nd line winger #16 Bristow got the final goal of the game for the Comets assisted by #55 defenseman Emma Gordon and #18 Hill.

With the final whistle, Cardiff ended the last game of the season on a high with a spectacular 6-0 win. Having done all they can do to see if they make this years’ playoffs, it is down to how other teams perform in the coming weeks. Watch this space…
